it's hard to even comprehend this.
we're half way through summer vacation. dead center.
what?!
i think it's nuts we get out the end of june, and this year (first time ever) we're back end of august. it's wrong. 9 weeks off. that's it. totally shortened.
the kids agree.
here's my proposal - nationwide:
every grade level, every state
school begins at 8:00 AM, goes to 4:00PM.
gym (phys ed) everyday
art 2 times a week
music 2 times a week
creative / cultural art class (acting, dancing, etc) 2 times a week
2 recesses a day (20 mins each)
every child required to be on an organization / team in any capacity (score keeper, manager, player, director, etc) that's extracurricular
normal classes of math, reading, science, social studies, etc tucked in the daily schedule
thanksgiving break, holiday break during December; march break and that's it for vacas
school begins the day after labor day, end the friday before memorial day weekend.
12 weeks off in the summer, and longer days for moms and dads to work if they are, and not juggle the kid-sitters.
we have 4.5 weeks until we go back to school. we've been out for 4.5 weeks. that's IT! and i've already gotten several back-to-school flyers.
bleck.
i am not shopping until the weekend before. i just can't.

I like your required inclusions - the art, the music, etc. If you said PE every day (can't remember, lol), I think I'd definitely vote for something like that. However, my guess is that you'd have a fair number of working parents who won't want to pay for 12 weeks of summer care for their kids. KWIM?
yeah, I hear ya ... however, if the parents aren't paying childcare during the year (remember kids are done with school at 4:00PM)what's the difference? right? that's my thought anyway ... and summer camps are typically funded by the city and you can get some really reasonable ones around our neck of the woods. of course, the sports camps we go to here, are not funded, but that's our choice.
hey, i dunno, it's an idea .... and one that lots of people have been interested in. it'd never pass the school system and the unions for teachers anyway. pipedream, that's what i'm having. :O)
We have 6, SIX, week of summer vacation. We've been out 3 weeks and are halfway through.
YUCK.
We have school from 8.35 until 3.15. Phys ed every day, music twice a week, art almost every day. WE've got it made. We just need more time to chill, for crying out loud :p.
